Painful purchase

I finally got back not the shop today and continued on with the cockpit table. I had laminated the top the other evening. Today was mortise the slots for the fiddles and I rough sized the teak for the fiddles and made a mock up fiddle out of alder. All good so far.

So, So True, Bill! Ever since the environmental quality acts, both federal and state - especially that little owl controversy, the prices shot up and stayed there.

I've never built a piece of furniture (floor sitting) where the wood cost less than $200. Wall hanging things are less expensive.

The cost of wood is staggering. Long gone are the days of building houses using exotics. My brother and I built houses in the 80's and 90's using hundreds of bf of Honduran mahogany. We used to do cathedral ceilings in tongue and groove HM and not think twice of it. It was our wood of choice for windows too. Oh well. Time and money marches on.

A year or so before retiring (1994), I witnessed the stumpage price of Ponderosa pine go up to and over $200/Bd.Ft. This was, and is still, a ridiculously high price.

NOTE: Stumpage is the value a purchaser will pay for standing trees. To that value, other added costs are logging, transportation, milling, storage of lumber, etc.

Wow! ridiculous for sure! Hardwoods always sell for more! I've heard of paying over $700 for a single tree in a front yard of a suburban home.

Back in the shop today. Made more progress on the cockpit table. Finished the morticing for the fiddles and started gluing them on.
