Quill stuck in up position on 10E

I am working on restoring a 10E. The quill will not move and seems as if it is locked in place. I have loosened all locking parts, but it simply will not move. Any words of advise on this?

update - I lightly tapped on the threaded stop bar and it moved the quill. I then cleaned what I could and lubed with wd40. I repeated this process and eventually it moved it's entire up and down movement. The spring recoil even worked. good to go!

Just be aware that WD-40 is "NOT" a lubricant. The quill should be given a good coat of furniture paste wax and buffed out thoroughly. Inside the head stock, the gear teeth can be lubed with a dry lubricant such as graphite. I believe there is an updated guide to lubricating the 10E/10ER. I am sure someone here can point you to it.

Welcome to the Shopsmith Forum.

Ron said there is an updated guide and I believe he was referring to the attached PDF I created to replace the lubrication instructions from the Owner's Guide. It is based off of the Mark 5 instructions. I do not recommend using oil on the Way Tubes or other parts as the original instructions recommended.

Hopefully you have a copy of the Owner's Guide but if not, they are available to download for free as a PDF copy. Don't buy a copy online. It is a waste of money to so.
