Can't adjust speed above "N".

So, I have an older Shopsmith that I purchased used. When I attempt to increase the speed above "N" on the Dial, I get this sound that is like a baseball card in spokes, only metal on metal.

My first take is that, prior to my purchase, the dial, somehow became misaligned and that the "sound" I'm hearing the assembly trying to over-travel and parts hitting that aren't supposed to hit.

Any troubleshooting advice would be appreciated.

In the first part, you're watching the belt to reach 1/16" to 1/8" from the outside edge of the motor pulley. On a machine that reaches this point, you can shut it off at that position. (Your machine almost certainly reaches and exceeds this position based on the symptoms.) Adjust the high speed stop so that it engages at this speed setting. Adjust the dial so it is reading correct (FAST). Reinstall speed control handle. (This engages the gears so that adjusting the speed control also adjusts the dial.)

The only problem doing it this way is you shut the machine off at a high speed setting and generally should not start it this way, it spins up too slowly. Never adjust the speed control unless the machine is spinning. Therefore, you need to spin it manually while slowly adjusting the speed control to a slower setting. I do this with a sanding disc, it makes it very easy to spin by hand. The recommendation is to only start the machine at its slowest setting. Personally, I start mine with a setting anywhere up to Saw/Joint range because in my shop there is no discernible difference in the time it takes to spin up. YMMV. Don't start it with a sanding disc at a speed higher than the disc is rated for.
