In my humble opinion, the SS is a terrific tool for a hobbiest with limited space. My shop is a 3 car garage that I share with my wife. In other words, I get the shop but I must store the freezer, the bulk stuff from Costco, the grandkids toys, etc. But otherwise it is MY shop. My two indispensable tools are the SS and the hawk scrollsaw.
This is a fun forum. Glad your on.

I know of no other tool that can match what a Shopsmith can do with equal precision, in a small space ,on a single 15amp circuit. For the home shop it's ideal. With that said,it does have limitations as all tools do.Those will be evident as your read through the forums. Some complain of the time it takes to change modes vs. stand alone tools. I've never been bothered by that.Projects can be planned to minimize change overs. The quality, design and support kept me loyal to Shopsmith as my space expanded.
Do you know of ANY other tool that you can get parts for a 50 year old machine? Or upgrade that MarkV?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Carl:
I can't add much to what others have alreay said. Like you, I work in a basement with about 10 x 15 ft dedicated shop space and a low ceiling. I've had my machine for 15 years and have made more things than I could count. The SS has limitations but can't be beat for our type of operations. Besides as you will discover on this forum, with a little ingenuity most problems can be solved and the answer is usually found here.
Good luck with your decision.

Thank you all for you replies. You all have been very helpful and encouraging. I think I am going to pull the trigger and but myself a Shop Smith. Other than on line, where else can they be purchased if I decide to but new?. I would like to see a demonstration. I know that the Home show in Boston will be coming up I think in Feb.,but I'm not sure if Shop Smith is going to have a booth. Does anyone have that info by chance?
Well all of you pro's out there get ready for a lot of questions in the near future. I will be asking a lot of questions.
Thanks again,
Carl

Shop Smith WILL NOT be giving any demonstrations. They had to cut back due to the economy.
