Question regarding plugging/hiding holes in wall mounts

A 1X4 can have holes centered 16 inches apart.

Rick - just a thought. You could try spacing your towel holders such that two of them fit over recessed screws holding the backer board to the wall. PITA if you want to remove from wall, but screws would not show.
