I carve the same as I turn ... as a part of something larger. I am certainly not in your class and so far have only done some releif for my boat and for some cabinetry. I agree that it is relaxing and satisfying. Last winter I carved trailboards I look forward to seeing more of your pieces.

Great work!
Last winter I carved trailboards for my sailboat while I was in AZ. It kept me from obsessing on golf and gave me a woodworking project while away from my shop.

Absolutley gorgeous work. I bow to you. I'm limited in turning because of the shopsmith bed length. I'm trying to use my imagination but i found I'k having trouble finding cane parts. i found a few pieces in Lee Valley but I need a source for 2 inch acrylic knobs or balls. thanks and i envy the cane and ships port anchor skid. Stan

You may want to take a look at treelineusa.com the offer a number of cane part. I had to use a friend’s lathe on some canes. But, for the most part cane length is going to be 34” or less. I make most of my shafts 32” to 33” I make up length with the handle. I use 3/8 to5/8 all thread to joining the handle and the shaft. That makes the cane 35” to 37” then I cut it down to fit the most people. This method I use to measure for canes.


Method Measure the person who will be using the cane.
a. Make sure that the user is wearing the shoes he most often wears when walking with a cane.
b. Ask the user to stand upright with his arms at his side in a relaxed manner with a slight bend at the elbow.
c. Measure the distance from the floor to the middle of the wrist joint using a yardstick or tape measure. Keep in mind that if the measurement is more than an even number, round up to the nearest 1/2 inch, ie: 31", 31-1/2", 32" etc.
(**In order to achieve accuracy, someone other than the person being measured must read the yardstick or tape measure.)
