I've made one cane but it has no carving, no lathe work and no special cane hardware.
Here it is being used by my father-in-law John who is 94. He likes it because it is more then a "just a cane" and he gets a lot of complements and comments when ever he is out with it. I wish it had been my idea but it wasn't.

That’s great. I never thought of doing a saw handle. It looks like it would be comfortable for the person to us too. .reible wrote:I've made one cane but it has no carving, no lathe work and no special cane hardware.

I like to collect canes and walking sticks and I made a bunch of walking sticks but nothing like the so nicely carved pieces shown here. We use to sell "stuff" on weekends at flea-markets. I can't say that I ever sold fine woodworking at them. I used to sit and hand make simple walking sticks during the markets and it helped draw people who would come stand around and watch. I would display the walking sticks in a wooden nail keg out at the edge of the aisle. They never really sold all that well, people just walked by without really looking unless I was doing something. I finally took down the walking stick sign and tacked a sign on the barrel that said "Alligator prods".
It got a lot of attention and sales did a good bit better. At one point a dealer from a small tourist town not far from here (Metamora IN) saw them and bought everything I had. That was near the end of our season and we quit doing flea markets then.
I did a lot of simple stuff like inlaying a penny in the handle or other odds and ends. I've only done enough carving to prove to me that I'm not very good at it.
