Sanding with regular sander

I ran into something yesterday that I have never noticed before. I don't know if I have been asleep or if this is the first time I was paying attention. I know, it's hard to tell. I ripped some rails and stiles to dress off the front of a couple of book cases I was working on. While using a vibrator sander, at a certain place in the rail, the sander would kick away from that spot. About two inches from the small knot, the sander would deflect. I found it harder to control. The grain is tight and straight and the wood is pine. I have sanded very much over my years. I always like the results of sanding, so I don't mind it all that much. But, this was new to me. I know that this is not a SS problem, but one that I have encountered with my new hobby. Anyone have any ideas of this cause and how I should respond? Thank you in advance.

There may have been a small pitch pocket near that knot? That's my 2 cents worth anyways.

Grain direction.
When it quits kicking, you know it's well sanded.

I like the idea that when it starts kicking it is well sanded. However, I wasn't finished when I looked at it.

Oh, well, I finally got it down to where I wanted it. But, it was tough.

TK, I wondered about the sap near that knot. The knot seemed to sand fine, but on either side, it did not like to stay put.

Today, I put the coat of oil base primer on it and will give it a light sanding tomorrow before putting on the first coat of latex. Will get pictures posted as soon as the first one is done. Thanks for your patience and responses.
