EERF sander grinder on a Shopsmith

Sander looks great! Any chance you would have some extra 4 x 60" belts? I have a slack belt sander and they are getting harder to find.

Belts I have are 1.5" x 60" but I don't have any extras. Sorry

I found in use that the EERF sander would be strengthened by adding a couple of stiffeners. I also painted it grey. In future I am thinking I should make the drive wheel larger but I can compensate easily right now by cranking up the speed. I will get some photos of the final version shortly.

After using the sander a bit, I did conclude that it would run better with a bigger drive wheel. I had a piece of round aluminum to make the wheel from but decided to widen it by adding plywood "rims". The photos show the wheel being turned on my Southbend 10k lathe on the shaft it is to be mounted on for concentricity and in place on the EERF sander. The old wheel was 1.57" in diameter and the new one is 4.15". I crowned it a little and the belt tracks perfectly. I had to cut a notch in the base to clear the wheel and sanding belt. It does run better with the larger drive wheel.

First poster here. I joined this forum specifically to look at your pictures. I've got a small shop in the works so have been looking at the shopsmith, but I wanted to see if I could also adapt it to grind knives.

Looks like my decision has been made!

Best of luck when making your own EERF sander. The hardest thing to duplicate will be the bearing assembly, seen here:

I was actually thinking of doing the No Weld grinder or else getting a Sure-Mak & adapting it for use on the Shop Smith, but yours looks great too so there are a few options.

How are you attaching the grinder to the SS? Just clamping it on?

I'd love to see some of your grinds!
