Get rid of the carpet and purchase some anti-fatigue mats. I think they are on sale at Woodcraft. The only place I had seen a SS used on carpet was in a meeting room at a local hotel where the Traveling Academy met. If the carpet was glued to the concrete. I wouldn't use laminate flooring either since it is easily gouged. You may want to check into an epoxy floor finish. I'm seriously considering that option for my shop.

I am converting a basement carpeted room and that's what I'm doing.
I figured if I pull the carpet up, it would not go back down and look right.

Well, you've all convinced me that laying plastic is not a good idea and that the foam interlocking pads are just as bad.

I'm leaning towards either putting the SS on a sheet of OSB, or just letting the cookie crumble and replace the carpet if/when needed.

My observation is that your 'addiction' is so pervasive and 'complete', that you will never desire to return to a carpeted floor(unless you need more room and you build a separate shop!).
