Freud Box Joint Cutter Set

Post by flashbacpt »

A few weeks ago, a friend and fellow woodworker passed away. Today, his widow gave me a Freud Box Joint Cutter Set, 8" dia, 5/8" Arbor, which was a recent purchase by her late husband, that was never opened.

I would like to use it on my SS, and was wondering if anybody out there has had any experience with using the above on their SS.

I am assuming that it will work safely with the proper arbor. Any and all suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

It should work just like a stacked dado using the 5/8" Moulder/Dado arbor # 505506 http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... oarbor.htm

You can probably use the standard Shopsmith table insert 5013799 for 500 or 51410004 for 510 with it as it is 5/8 inch wide or make a zero clearance insert. If using the standard insert double check that the blades clear the sides of the insert, if not slide the carriage back and forth to center the blade in the insert. http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... nserts.htm

Besides the arbor already mentioned, I would use one of the zero clearance inserts and make sure to back up the cut with a wooden miter gauge extension. Woodsmith has a great kit that works with the Shopsmith miter gauge to cut box joints with this kit any insert works that the blade fits through.
