Which arbor should I be using

with a 6" stacked dado set that has a 5/8" arbor hole?

I have two. One is for 5/8" saw blades and the length of the thread is really too short to be safe (in my opinion. The other has plenty of thread to mount the entire set of blades and chippers but it interferes with the Table Bar (163) and/or the Tie Bar Guard (155).

I usually do dadoes with out the dust collector but today I was attempting to setup for a dust collection test in response to the challenge issued by mbcabinetmaker (Mark). This forced me into an attempt to use all of the appropriate pieces. Needless to say, I have not completed my contribution to the challenge.

FYI, the old 5/8" Universal arbor is about 1/4" shorter than the current molder/dado arbor.

I had to quit, in the shop, before I really figured out what is wrong with my setup. It is too hot for this old man to be out there.

I hate that. I used to work outside here and in El Paso all day long.

BTW I am using the molder/dado arbor that you referenced, beeg. A shorter one, like SDSSmith referenced, may be what I want.

Without finishing my setup validation, it appears that my habit of pushing the carriage up against the headstock might be my only problem. It appears that all I have to do is pull the headstock away from the carriage about an inch.

I hope it is that simple.

The arbor spacers should be used/not used/ placed on the headstock side of the dado stack leaving only a single thin spacer/washer, the keyed washer and the nut on the far end with just enough thread to fully engage the nut. The 'auto' blade alignment will NOT function with this setup. i.e. You MUST align the carriage so the blade mates with the blade slot manually. This will increase the headstock-carriage spacing due to the extra distance between the arbor sleeve and the blade.

I.E. I do think it is 'that simple'.
