Revised Spice Rack
A usable Spice Rack was published in December/January 2000 Family Handyman, page 16. It was of interest because it could be rotated using Lazy Susan Hardware. Of interest was, if it could be made simpler, using fewer tools, adapted to standard containers, and use common materials.
The first change was to make it w/o the Lazy Susan hardware. The Lazy Susan Hardware was replaced with a lag screw with a protruding head that would serve as the pivot point. Solid stock was replaced with two spaced plywood disks, the upper disk to hold the container the lower disk to support the container.

The revision could not be made large enough to accommodate 12 containers because it would exceed the depth of upper cupboards. The height allows access to the center post and upper tier containers with sufficient overhead to turn the rack or remove a container when rack is setting in the cupboard.
After a prototype was built. The prototype rotated easily on the lag screw head. The ¾ “ spacing to hold the containers is deeper than the original design and is a desirable feature.

A revised version was drawn to adapt to the common larger spice containers. The revised design holds 11 large containers. The revisions made the rack easier to build, used plywood in stead of solid stock, held the containers in deeper wells, and conserved overhead space by eliminating the Lazy Susan Hardware. A 3 “ by 1/4” lag screw .was as the pivot head. It was not feasible to place containers on the tiers because they spin off and fall behind the rack.
The disks were cut using the circle cutter and the band saw. The edges were sanded using a 1 x 4 clamped to the saw table and a pivot point in the 1 x 4. The table was moved closer to the sanding disk until the entire circumference of the disks were sanded,
The angle for the holes on the disks were laid out using a protractor. The angle was marked near the edge and the disk positioned on the drill press table against bumpers of a try square and straight stock with clamps on the drill press table. A mark was extended from one of the marks made with the protractor. Anyone of the protractor marks can be used as long as it is easy to line up with the mark on the drill press jig. The changes allowed a hole saw to be used instead of 1 7/8” forstner bit. Unfortunately. a 2 1/4” hole saw is needed and it may not be in your tool box.

Sub assemblies were glued up using a short lag screw to to hold two discs and a spacer. Pilot holes and glue were used on all of the the spacers. The only requirements for the spacers is that they do not intrude into the container wells. I used circular ones, but other shapes can be used. The center handle was turned, the top and bottom sanded to make the top was round and to remove a very small tenon that was turned on the bottom. The tenon was turned on the bottom to make sure that the handle would sit squarely on the disk. A Pilot hole was drilled into the handle to avoid splitting it during final assembly.
