Hmmm... Not sure what you're seeing, but that might be an optical illusion.

Is the photo not showing in the correct orientation for you? I took the picture with the camera held sideways. I rotated it to the correct orientation after uploading it to Photobucket last night. But when I logged on from work just now (where this computer has never loaded that image so it wouldn't be cached), it was sideways here in the forum. I logged in to Photobucket and looked at it there and it was in the correct orientation. Refreshed the page here, and the picture was rotated correctly. Weird...

But to find my other mistake, look at the rails.

Re the bottom, is the bottom 'loose' and has a gap to the side? Or is there an insert under the candle?

No orientation problem noticed either last night or today.

Nope, still not what I'm referring to. Although I saw that on the photo and I'm not sure what it is. I didn't see it on the actual lantern. I don't know if there's a problem there or if it's a trick of the light and shadows. I'll have to check it out when I get home tonight.

No orientation problem noticed either last night or today.

There isn't a candle in it yet. The light you're seeing is just a reflection in the glass. But, I think I see what you're talking about. The base, where the candle would sit, has a rabbeted edge. The rabbet is wide enough so the thin part of the base fits into a groove in the bottom rails and for the glass to fit inside the rabbet. This holds the base in place and the bottom of the pieces of glass in place.

When I ran into my problem with the sides being too narrow and not coming together at all of the corners with the base in place, my first attempt at fixing it was to trim the base off a hair on all four sides. This didn't work and if I had gone any further with the trimming, I would have had to make a new base. Consequently, with the corners successfully patched and the lantern assembled, the base was a bit loose in the grooves. Yes, it might have twisted a little so that the gap where the glass sits is larger at one end of each side than the other end.

But, that's still not what I'm referring too!

So I have two ways to look at this... 1) The mistake I'm referring to (which I considered a big one) isn't very noticeable at all, or; 2) I have more problems here than I thought I did!

Good guess, but still no.

Each pane of glass is installed as per plans with the smooth side out. I think I would have preferred the textured side out , but that might have made it hard to attach the copper motifs. Beyond that, I don't know the reason, but I'm sure there had to be a good reason for the plans to specify putting the smooth side out.
