Newbie Miter Saw Question

I agree, a 10" Compound Miter Saw is the wrong tool for the job. Easiest and cheapest way (if you don't have a Shopsmith) is to use a circular saw with a guide.

Depending on the size of the board, I would say even if you do have a Shopsmith, this might be easier with a guide and a circular saw. Measure out your cut; align a long level, a cutting guide, or a piece of straight scrap with the marking plus the offset from the sole of the saw to the blade; affix the guide with a couple c-clamps; and cut.

Since this is particle board, it is likely to have a lot of tear-out (no matter what you cut it with). If you can back the cut up (zero clearance insert on the table saw or zero clearance plate attached to the circular saw sole), it will help a lot. You can also try putting masking tape over the line before you make the cut.
