Attaching sandpaper discs

For years in the 70's and 80's I used a "feather edger" that was actually a pistol style polisher by Makita. You could get a foam sanding backer disc for it that had a canvas face. 3M sold discs without adhesive and they also sold, in a tube or in a can, "sanding disc adhesive". You could go about ten discs before you needed to re-apply. For my money it was a better (and cheaper) system than the current (more convenient) method. Sadly I think it has gone the way of many other older , better solutions in the interest of "convenience".

About 3-4 years ago, a few of us had the same conical disc sandpaper attachment problem. We believed it was a bad batch of glue on the sandpaper or the glue life was over aged even through Shopsmith did not find any problem in their current stock. We were able to get replacement sanding discs from Shopsmith and never saw the problem again.

We were never able to get these few sandpaper discs to stay sticking to the conical sanding disc regradless of what glue or spray we used. Just be careful when first using a reglued sandpaper disc as it did cause cuts and bruises to our arms and face when it suddenly detached/explosed from the sanding disc when being used.

Bill, your message--& this forum-- just paid for this computer & modem. I will hencefroth proceed to my garage, ferret out the remaining papers in question and dispose of same frothwith.
Right after I go to Shopsmith.com and order me a new set of conical papers.

Mr. Mayo, I got the manual for that planer today. its a Jet, model JWP-12, in the ShopSmith records. I called Jet and they sent a manual via e-mail. I can forward if you like??

not to get off the disc sanding subject. i stopped by harbor frieght a couple of weeks ago and picked up two disk's, 150 grit, 12 inches, and adheasive backing. $5.98 for two....i've sharpened all my lathe tools and there is still a surface to sand wood at a fast rate......on the first one
