Lock ring spacers!!!!

Exactly my point in the other post about finding things on this web site. For new customers looking around you can't find what you need. Now for experienced users like you with over 500 posts I am sure it is much easier.

What is even more interesting is the the first four people to respond are also the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 10th top poster on the forum...

Now my post was towards the end because after finding the post I first went to my shopsmith instuction manual and looked up the proper term to search for. That lead me to the parts list and exploded view took me on a little side track to see if any other of the things that attach use these. I then finished my posting having used the google search engine and posting the results. When my post came up I found that it had already been well covered by other posters.

Half the problem of searching is know what to search for. Had I looked for "lock ring spacers" or "locking collars" it would be hard to find just that part. If you know the name that shopsmith calls it, then finding it is not so bad. If the site had things in a list you would still have to look a long time before you come upon the "right name" and even at that you might not ever find it because the name doesn't sound like the name you think it should be called, ie "locking collar" , "circle with a setscrew", "tube stop", or whatever else might enter your brain.

I agree with you cincinnati! When I read the postings, I had to think of where I had seen this little "stopping ring thingy". After I realized we were talking about the rings that are part of the tail stock - it became a matter of finding the tail assembly. Now that wasn't easy for me either! I didn't know the proper name. The bunch of posts I have made didn't help a bit! The tail stock couldn't be found in my printed version of the catalog. Also couldn't find it on the owner's site -in the listing of replacement parts. I was looking for some kind of drawing like the one reible found. If I wasn't so lazy, I'd have gone out to the shop and looked up the part in the parts lists I have out there.

The challenge of the question drew me into the search. I can't tell you how I found the parts listing of the tail stock assembly, but there it was- it just appeared. The only collars in the assembly were part no. 501438 and the cost looked like it was about right. Without finding the picture of the assembly, as did reible, I would have had to call customer service to confirm before ordering.

So - reible and dusty get an A+ and I get a C (maybe).

Yes, it would be nice if some parts were easier to find on the Shopsmith site! With all of their parts - they have a humongous chore. I honestly believe they are trying!

I forgot they were a necessary part of the tailstock...and I have two. I'm embarrassed.....

As for a source, I will take one down to the hardware store that seems to have everything. I have seen these collars in other sizes so I have my doubts that they are an exclusive SS item.

Thes are available at most places that sells shafts,pulley/belt hubs and other drive components. Size is 1 1/4 ID. The ones I've seem(and bought) were slightly cheaper than SS and somewhat more clunky with a larger OD than the SS ones.
