Yet Another Arbor Question

I have a hand-me-down ShopSmith Mark V that was purchased in 1977 by my father. The original bill of sale lists a '5/8" Universal Arbor' part number 505506. This is the arbor that my father used for all of his saw blades and for the dado set he had.

When I look this part number up on shopsmith.com, the picture matches what I have but there is a statement that says "NOTE: Cannot be used with regular saw blades."

So, my question is, did my father use the wrong arbor all that time or is the statement incorrect? Or, does shopsmith mean that it can't be used with regular SHOPSMITH blades? I guess what I really need to know is whether or not I can keep using this arbor for saw blades or do I need to purchase a different arbor?

The part number you reference is shared with the current molder/dado arbor. The universal arbor is approximately 1/4" shorter than the molder/dado arbor. That 1/4" is important in missing things like table tiebars and such. I think your dad was okay using it with regular saw blades and you can continue the practice. On a side note, it seems strange that Shopsmith did not assign a new part number to the current molder/dado arbor. I can confirm the universal arbor item number of 505506 from my own stock of arbors. The instructions that come with it indicate that it can hold any accessory up to 11/16".

It means exactly that: It cannot be used with regular saw blades that you would get at Sears, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. The arbor has a larger diameter, and therefore can be used only with the Shopsmith saw blades.

Nope! What was meant is that 505506 cannot be used with regular ss blades. That is because the ss blades have a 1 1/4" arbor hole, and 505506 is 5/8".

Right idea, just upside down!:)

That is the same arbor my dad's MK 5 came with when I inherited it. I have no other arbors with it. It also came with one blade with a 5/8" hole and it fits the arbor with no problem.

This is the new arbor with that part number and it measures 3 1/8" long.


My old arbor 3" long and works a blade just fine.
