Well the legs I made this way (and continue to) have the table apron mortised into the legs. Very strong and was simply the way they did the pieces I copy. No butt joint in this. The leg was only tapered below the width of the table apron.
Now that I see the picture of what you are doing (or someone is) yes, I'm actually making those exact boxes right now. They are called Plyo boxes (in my world) and are varying heights from 12 to 48 inches tall with a top on them. They are used for plyometrics at our gym. I do use a similiar jig but different. Think of cross cut sled that has a 10 degree cut tapered triangle fixed to the normally 90 degree fence. This gives me my 10 degree taper on the board for the first cut, then flip for the second. And yes, for plyo boxes I am using a biscuited butt joint with screws. It's not federal furniture after all.

Thanks to all for the input
Let me try to explain further.. but i think the answer is here.
The windmill has 6 sides. I am not cutting bevels as I am using dowels to cover the joint.
I think the answer is to make the first cut at 5 degrees and then just double it for the second. I'll give that a try and see what happens.
