A Finial Repair Project

My young niece could see I needed more practical jobs than polishing my machine and sitting at the computer

She asked me to fix a finial-top on her bed-post. I decided the old one won't be worth gluing, and too many parts are missing already.

Part of "affording" the PowerPro for me was selling off my Talon chuck. I've decided I work slow enough that I've got the time to make special faceplate setups or other homemade chucking gadgets. So here is the Faceplate being used.

Here is the old finial sitting above a new billet of wood (some laminated poplar planks). I already bored a center-hole in the "bottom" of the billet using the Tailstock chuck, so it's on to the rounding and shaping, done between centers for stability.

Here I've made a very rough initial shaping, using a piece of cardboard to check my work. From this point on, I need to catch up on family time, sharpen my chisels, and rest up to think about the subsequent detail work as best I can....

Looks like it is coming right along, Chris! Good idea to use a cardboard template. I'm sure the finished product will look excellent!

I had to wait a few days even to have time to look at it again, but I was able to finish turning and part it off tonight!

I think I'll be able to mail it to the little niece along with some sandpaper, so she can do the finishing touches and painting for her bed:

I think she will be pleased! Except for the sandpaper.

You could scribble over it with a black marker if you wanted to 'deny its existence'!:D

Nice Job! I'll bet she enjoys the sanding, painting! It'll sure give her a real sense of accomplishment and joy/pride.
