Yet another Newie

Howdy forum,
I have recently purchased a Shopsmith Mark V 500. I wished I had discovered this forum first as then I would have had more knowlege as to what to look for in the parts box. So be it.
Anyways here is my situation; The table saw table appears to be functional but the carriage posts teeth have some rust. It has the small extention table and the fence and miter appear tho be missing some parts. There are several other items missing as well. I have tried to contact the seller but he has not returned my calls. I bought this primarily for the bandsaw as that was what I was in the market for when this came up and it was considerably less than the price of a new 14" bandsaw (even the cheap ones).
My problem is this; it is a bit overwheming as to the parts that may or may not work for the table saw. As much as I would like to just upgrade to the 520, I cannot afford to do so at this time. I have been looking on ebay but I do not know if the parts, table extentions, with miter slot, miter, fence, etc. will work or not. Some state 510, others say 500 but I cannot tell if they mean a ModelV 500, e/er, etc.
Is there a "list" that shows what will fit all? I would hate to buy some things only to have to replace them when I can upgrade. Any suggestions, or insights will be sincerly appreciated.

Hi and welcome.

nothing wrong with a 500--I used one for over 20 years before selling it in NY and moving to Tucson ( Ina and 1-10)..I now have 510s.

the SS home site will usually tell you what parts are what, get some manuals, that will show break downs. add some pix to your questions and the many expects might be able to tell you what you are missing.

check out the sawdust sessions done by nick and drew for super info.

do a search on this forum and just about most everything has been talked about.

ask questions and check out the nebie info page on this site.

I have been wading my way through the forum for a week or so. I bought the help kit w/video and I have spent most of my time cleaning things up. This was a well used machine that was somewhat neglected for awhile. I got the powerhead all cleaned out and lubed and upgraded the bearings on the bandsaw and got it running much quiter than when I got it. It was not all that noisy but with everything adjusted, it runs much smoother now.
I once worked with a guy in the early 80's and he went on about getting a Shopsmith for Christmas. After Christmas that year you could not wipe the grin off of his face for months. Remembering his face is what prompted me to buy this machine:rolleyes:

Welcome to the world of Shop smith.

Glad to see you are diving into things. As was suggested, can you post some pictures? This will help others on here determine what set up you have and how it can be upgraded.

The 520 and 510 are vastly different in some aspects but similar in others. The main difference is the fence and how it slides along the table. I have both a 510 and a 520 and the fence is not interchangeable. Neither are the sliding table extensions. I would say the 520 extends the table out by an inch or two farther than the 510 not allowing the fence to run across both. If you got 510 parts, you can't exactly use them in a 520 system so buy which ever you can afford and want to use for several years.

Both systems work great and some will swear by one over another. Most comes done to your price range and if you find a steal of a deal out there.

I got some more stuff cleaned up and sorted. The miter gauge was missing the hold down portion but it looks like the retro kit will take care of that. The upper saw guard is missing the anti kickback pawls and springs but I put a bid on clear cover on e-bay.
I noticed on e-bay a table extention with a miter groove in it but I could not find anything like it in the Shopsmith catalog.
I will try and get some pictures up this weekend. I am thinking of just making some table extentions. Has anyone made their own? Any suggestions on how to attach to main and / or extention table?
I would like to say thanks to everyone on the forum. I have found alot of good info and suspect there is tons of good stuff here. it is just finding the time to search it out. I am still trying to figure out this P...eckin C...ontraption out too:eek:

Maybe this will help.

The 510/520 distinctions are only relevant when referring to rip fence, and extension and floating tables as well as the main work table. The rail system is different and not compatible. Just about everything else is independent and interchangeble as long as you are restricting to Mark 5 or Mark V. The significant 'other' is the model 10 E/ER and those items are mostly not compatible/interchangeble.

Some pix of what you think has missing parts will provide the ability of helpful folks properly informing you 'what's what'!

P.S. BTW saw arbors do vary for 510 and 520, but the carriage and quill can be adjusted to compensate for a 'mismatch'. What becomes 'missing' is default(automatic) alignment of saw blade to table slot.

Remember: We are discussing a Mark V Model 500 vs Mark V Model 510 vs Mark V Model 520.

There is a Shopsmith Mark 7 also.

If you have not already done so - study this.

To distinguish between 510 and 520 and Mark 7 or here for some spec comparisons.

The Shopsmith site ( at http://www.shopsmith.com ) has just been updated (I just now discovered) and it seems that they have eliminated most references back to the Mark V Model 500. For discussions like this, that is a real shame. It appears this was done while introducing details about the Mar7.

Hopefully I have pointed you to some sources of information that help you in your quest to become familiar with the various models.

Please do not hesitate to return with your unanswered questions.

I think we might have a typographical error here. There is a difference in arbors between 500 and 510/520 but the 510 and 520 arbors are basically the same and are completely interchangeable.

Future discussions are going to be even more difficult than now. They will involve:

10E/10ER, Mark 5(500), Mark V (500,505,510,520), Mark VII and Mark 7.

I sure wish that Shopsmith had made/left all of this technical information in place online.

I am not certain just what JPG has in mind when he says the arbors vary between the 510 and 520 but here are some photo images of the two arbor types that I use interchangeably on my 510 and 520. They are different primarily because one is for a 5/8" arbor and the other for the 1 1/4" arbor.

My 'mind' contents would have been clearer to the reader had I included 'from a Mark V500/Mark5' in what I did 'say' - BTW saw arbors do vary - insert left out words here - for 510 and 520. I did not mean to imply 505/510/520 arbors were different among those three models.

The arbor comment was an after thought to prevent an assumption that ONLY the rails varied.

The main point for his original question is that any 505/510/520 identified part that is not a fence, table rail, extension/floating table will work on a 500. The total reason for that is the differing rails.

Due to the arbor length versions, they will work by compensating with either the quill or main work table positioning. Too bad I did not answer it that way to begin with!;)

I might add here that not all persons selling stuff on e-bay are accurate in their descriptions regarding the model designations and from whence their part emanated!
