Storage of lathe chisels
Anyone got any examples of how they store their chisels. I tried a magnetic bar but its not real effective. Need to keep them close at hand for use.

Hi cm,
I just store mine in the bottom drawer when not in use, and when I'm using them they rest on the shelf. It gets a bit cluttered but still works for me.

Fellow forum member Brick1 built a nice holder that hangs from the way bars. Here is a link to a picture attached to his post.

I don't have any pictures, but mine are stored very similarly to dasgud. I built a small cabinet that sits under my Shopsmith, and they are in the bottom drawer. The cabinet is plywood, so the cutting edges sit firmly against the wood so no other metal comes in contact with them. It is crude, but works for me.

One often unsung advantage of a small shop. Everything is just a quick step away from where you are.

This cradle hangs on the way tubes and keeps the chisels close by. I hang it on the wall when I'm done.

I use a tray with sides -- similar to a shallow drawer -- that has two cross pieces attached to the bottom so that they act as keepers to prevent the tray from falling off the way or bench tubes. It's wide enough to hold about 8 or so lathe chisels and keeps the chisels handy when turning.

I have a similar thing that has 3 sides about 2.5" high and one open side. The cleats on the bottom fall so that if sat on the way tubes it sits about an inch lower at the back with the open side at the front. It must be about 14" square. I didn't make it, it came with one of my SS's but is homemade. I thought I might make something on that concept but make it to sit down on the bench tubes and make it wider to hold more chisels.
Since my Frankensmith is my dedicated lathe most lathe tools will be stored right there. I do have several sets of chisels and do plan to store those extras in a drawer in the old Mark VII base where the DC bag went.

This is my setup for now. I do plan on building storage for a wall mounted unit but for now this is how mine are stored and used.
