wingman2010 wrote:I think so. The other thing is, if it has new way tubes, is there rust in the headstock holes that would scratch the new tubes? If there is, how do you get the rust out of the headstock?
There is nothing in the headstock that rusts AND contacts the way tubes.
A 2" pvc drain pipe with end cap and plug along with a pint or two of evaporust will get rid of the way/bench tube rust over night!(one tube at a time). Then fine abrasives to polish.
I would use a 20%off coupon at HF and get a gallon of evaporust!;)

Hi Wingman: A truck so that you can move it in one piece is the easiest. Like the saying goes 'friends help friends move... good friends help friends move dead bodies... or shopsmiths!'
Take along a good set of allen keys, a large flat-head screwdrive and a small crescent wrench (adjustable wrench, you may know it as something else). Oh, and a good dead-blow or hard-rubber mallet will be useful to encourage parts to come apart.
TAKE PICTURES AS YOU GO!!!!!
You will find that the legs come off with the flat head and a small wrench. The other bits (mostly) will come off with the right allen key. The head will slide off the posts making it VERY easy to transport. Teh long posts will then be the biggest and most unwieldy parts.
Good Luck, and welcome to the obsession!

Weekend project on the newest part of our family...Evaporust in PVC. Thanks for the tip. Will that help me get rid of the blackness left behind in some spots, even after the rust is gone?
How do I get rid of mud dobbers nests that have consumed my bandsaw?
Talking about moving the SS: My wife and I took a small pickup. I unscrewed the 5 bolts on the first leg (with a flathead screwdriver) and slipped it on the tailgate as she removed the leg. same thing on the other side. With 10 bolts and 10 minutes, we were on the road (after we got the tables and tools loaded)!
P.S. I want to make some sawdust this weekend. Does anyone have a good plan for a "carpenter's toolbox"? Just a basic tool caddy to hold some stuff!

What pray tell is a flathead screwdriver?
Depends on what the 'blackness is. If wd40/sanding debris, maybe(I really do not know). If oxide of iron, it will either disappear or be very thin. If you leave them in there long enough, they will polish very nicely, very quickly. Wax immediately after polishing and cleaning.! Leave the dried evaporust on the inside(rust inhibitor). Just start polishing with the dried evaporust on the outside(do not bother to wash off etc.).
Mud dobbers? PBBlaster?:D Actually I think knocking them with whatever works. Maybe a flathead screwdriver will work.
Oh! Kudos on your acquisition!

Hmmm, a 5-function hand tool. Dave- are you saying that it's the "Shopsmith of screwdrivers"?
