Screw size for headstock covers?

My 'new" '78 SS is missing couple of the screws which hold on the motor pan. Anybody know what the spec is?
They appear to be #8 x 1/2 self-threading, but I cant fit any known-thread nut on them.

Hey there,

I just went back to customer service and looked up your screws. The screws that hold the pan to the housing and the screws that hold the motor to the pan are sheet metal screws. I think somebody might have "fixed" you SS. I do have for you part numbers for the two sets of screws I mentioned above.

Pan to houing - 513608 qty 7
Motor to pan - 191986 qty 4

They are #8 pan head metal tapping screws. No nut will fit them. Check if clipon (spring flat nut - ref #100) nuts were used as you may need a couple if they are missing. Screws and nuts are available at Lowes, Home Depot and most hardware stores. I always use stainless steel (SS) to prevent rusting. 1/2" to 1" length will work OK. I use #10 SS 3/4" as a replacement because the #8 screw holes have been stripped in the headstock and/or as a normal repair practice.

Right on, Bill: standard 8/32s fit just fine -except in one loction, where the clip nut apparently was lost long ago and the previous guy just tapped the head casing to what appears to be 10/32 (which I'm out of at the moment).
