Assuming the hole spacing on the insert is 3 5/8", the mystery piece will allow attaching it to it. The 4 holes allow attaching the two t-nuts for use in the top t-slot on the rip fence.

How about a clue as to why '7/8"'! 1 1/8" comes to mind!;)

BTW The 505..20 mortise clamp shaft adapter has a 5/8" od and a t-nut for mounting on the fence like a 500/tailstock adapter etc. Mortise adapter shaft kinda long though!:rolleyes: A short length of 5/8: shafting with a 3/8" x 16 stud would work better!

7/8", 1 1/8"od(hub) and 5/8" hole/shaft ?????????????????

P.S. Tail stock adapter od = 3/4" ????? 7/8" still a 'mystery'!

How did your little gray cells do?

Did you see that the distance from one side to the hole is not the same on the other side?

In most cases you could care less but this is one of those times where things like that matter.

On one side the hole is 3/8" from the edge, the other side it is 1/2". If you were to put two t-nuts in the track next to each other one way the hole spacing between adjacent blocks can be 1", when the two have the larger spacing towards each other. It could also be just 3/4" if the two shorter spacings faced each other. Now there is one more condition, that being having a long space facing short space. Just to see if you are paying attention I'll let you figure that out.

For this design I don't want to have to check to see which spacing is where. Easiest way to do that is to use the 1" spacing, or worst case condition. And yes the two parts are mounded that close together.

In case you need to know someday the hole to hole spacing is 1", right it down if you can't remember it or just measure it when you need to know.

Well done people, you have managed to figure out the four new holes that were added today. (Well, I'm really only sure one person did.)

So if you were still lost this should confirm that the t-nuts have a purpose in this project.

The t-nuts allow this to mount on the newer 500 rip fence(555646) as well as the 510 and 520 rip fences.

The mystery hole has a mystery part that fits in it. I got this part 3 or maybe 4 years ago planning to build this. This year it is happening. I will give you a final hint, I have a feeling someone will solve the mystery today.

FINAL HINT:

When you think outside the box you might want to think back to a much earlier box.

OK So ya gots a MT2(female) with a 7/8" od.(and maybe a lip with a larger od).

Jig will be useful for not only holding a sanding disc for hand sanding, but providing a pivot for creating circular objects. Also provides a tapered hole for those tapered objects(an improvement over the 500 fence straight hole).

Nicely done!

No more Mystery!(other than where ya got the female MT2).

Most of you now know that this can have many uses, vertical lathe, mounting a drill chuck, disk sander, use as a center for disk sander in horizontal mode, and lots and lots more things. I'm sure some of you will come up with things I hadn't even though about, please feel free to think about this and do some posting of your own ideas.

Well it has been fun but it is time to start finishing the mystery.

If you own one of the 10E/10ER's you will now. If you have looked at any of the restores done you might remember. The official name I think is "floating center" and "nut - center lock".

I got mine from ebay and that might be a source along with some of the known sellers that are on the forum. Of course if you are an owner of one of these older machines you already have one.

I have been thinking about this a few years now and I'm glad I have it finished. Hope it brings on a few thoughts in your little gray cells.

FWIW, it is a 10ER part. 10E taper was machined into the tailstock(not adjustable!).
