Once upon a time the splice was done by decreasing the thickness of the backing on the face side on one end and on the back side of the other end.
When spliced, the end with the back 'decreased' would be the mounted so the belt would run with that end passing the workpiece first. If reversed, the face 'end' can catch on the workpiece.
More recently I have seen splices that are more of a butt joint with taped back securing the ends.
I do not recall any without direction arrows. But then I do not use them a lot either(do not purchase often).
