I think the best approach has been mentioned. Turn 2 or more pieces with an eye toward joining them back together.
Failing that all you really need is a method of attaching a live center strong enough to take the load. A work bench anchored against a wall with holes drilled for the tailstock. As stated a small laser pointer chucked in a drill chuck on the headstock makes alignment relatively easy.
Depending on the thickness of the spindle, some sort of steady rest may be required as well.
