I like what you are saying about spacing and the clapping in order to find the right place.
Being where I am (CANADA) and far away from the nearest Shopsmith Dealer, I intend to do like many of you and buy wheels locally and deal with the replacing of it without any template to help me out. So your comment just gave me a way of doing it.

I agree as long as <0, 1/4",1/2" rise is the target.
However once that hole location is determined, a template/pattern would be prudent to assure all 4 are the same.
That is how I did it.
My caster stems were too long so I also added washers to compensate for that(before determining hole location).
The casters will likely 'float' on the floor when raised(contact floor with no weight bearing)
