shopsmith repair
Moderator: admin
You mentioned you upgraded your SS in 2004 - does this mean you upgraded it to a model 510? 520? Post a picture or give more details on the type of carriage and the location/severity of the crack. I would think that a used carriage on E-Bay would be cheaper and more reliable than trying to repair it but that's just a hunch without seeing the actual crack. Yes, you can weld aluminum but I bet this costs more than just buying a used carriage.
'78 Mark V 500 #27995 (my Dad bought new)
'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

Yep, I’ve had a cracked carriage. I also thought about having it welded but given the cost and reliability in getting a good weld I instead opted to buy a used carriage. Actually a new one from SS is not too awfully expensive. What you should also do if you haven’t already, is inspect the table assembly. Particularly the structure under the table… the table bar and tube. This is a casting structure that the trunnions attach to and also the two vertical tubes that raises and lowers the table. If your crack was similar to mine -- near the tube hole, I suspect it may have been caused by a force transmitted from the table tubes. Perhaps the table was hit by something or it hit something, or maybe overturned at some point. This likely applied a high bending force in the tubes that caused the carriage structure to crack. Anyway, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see cracks in the table bar and tube cast structure also. I found cracks in mine. Here are some pictures.liquid993 wrote:i upgraded my shopsmith in 2004.i have found that i have a crack in the carriage on the left where the table post slides up and down.
