Shopsmith's speed chart has different speeds for forstners - generally slightly faster for hardwood and much slower for softwood.

Here is a Shopsmith speed chart at the bottom of this site Re: Shopsmith Speed Reducer. I shows the lower speeds attained with the speed reducer.

And with the speed reducer on the Power Pro you can get down to about 35 RPM.

I don't have that chart and can't read it in the link. I don't doubt what you say but why would one use higher speeds in hard wood and much slower speeds in soft wood? :confused: That goes against everything I know about drilling. :confused:

OK, but the Power Pro minimum speed is 250 RPM. The speed reducer provides a 7 to 1 reduction as far as I know. 250 divided by 7 equals 35.71. What am I missing?

Power Pro plus Speed Reducer = 35 RPM. Good for finishing turnings

Well, what you are missing is my 82 year old mind. ;) Thanks for the correction.

You are correct on the 250 minimum speed of the PowerPro. Although I used my PP for years, my mind thinks it goes down to 200 RPM. 200/7= 28 1/2+ RPM.

Although the 50 RPM difference between 250 and 200 is minor for my purposes, It should be important for posting speeds in this forum.

Guess I don't check speed often enough.

Actually, I miss the speed control of the standard headstock, where exact rotational speed wasn't that important. However the PowerPro is a much nicer headstock! It gives exact speeds, but I still use the close enough philosophy. using 1350 for all sanding and 3450 for all sawing/dadoing. You know - the "easy to touch" buttons above the display.

Mine is 68 and I am starting to have the same problems.

I still wonder why the PP does not go down to 100 RPMs.

Speed is up to the individual in most cases. 4 or 5 hundred RPMs one way or the other should not make any difference as long as it works.

I keep wanting to take the shopsmith chart out to the powerpro and compare some of the hole size/bit/rpm to see if they agree. Just don't seem to think of it when it is convenient to do.

So has anyone done that? If someone has or does please report back here on what you find.
