You didn't say how you attached this to a face plate so I will add a comment about doing that. This was how I did such things before I got a Nova G3 chuck that I now use for a lot of things rather then a face plate. You will need a scrap piece of wood that gets attached to the face plate with screws. You will want it slightly larger then the face plate a some what round.
After mounting the piece to the face plate you will turn it round and flat. Locate the center and using a small nail drive it in at the center. Clip the nail head off so that say a 1/4" is exposed.
Take your work piece and find the center of both ends. Make a small indent at the center then with a piece of paper cut to the same size as the face plate you will glue the pieces together with the paper between. The nail will find the center mark and then clamp in the lathe using the quill to apply pressure.
Once the glue is dry, preferably overnight and then maybe a bit more you will be ready to turn the outside between centers. It is OK to turn the waste block a little if need be to work on that end of the piece.
BTW the AL face plate I had from shopsmith was not flat. I turned mine to get it flat but the intermediary wood piece fixes that for you.
Now it could be you have other issues like the quill and if you can afford the newer two bearing quill it is a nice addition to the machine. If not putting in a new bearing is not that hard to do and might help if the old one is worn.
So those are a few things to think about.

Thanks for the advice! I did ensure that my quill and tailstock were aligned. I've noticed that the tailstock likes to slip, so I check that often.
I simply screwed the workpiece to the faceplate. I start with a longer blank than what I need and then part out the finished workpiece from the larger bank so I didn't have to worry about marring the bottom of the finished product.
I will have to try the scrap block method.
Its possible that my faceplate isn't flat. Ill have to check it on my reference plate at work.

The nice thing about adding the wood between the parts and the face plate is that you can use your lathe to make the wood surface flat and thus not see any issues that might be attributable to the face plate.

Is it a common problem to have the tail stock eccentric slip, requiring another set screw?

Sadly, yes.
To add to the sadness, the eccentric is soft. Over tightening the single screw creates a depression that makes small adjustments(centering) nigh onto impossible. Also the fit is sloppy. I use a strip of sheet metal(steel) around the eccentric to both take up the slop and provide a harder, greater surface area for the set screw to bear against.

The SS I bought new in 1994 has two set screws in the tail stock.

If one considers a second set screw a solution, yes.
IMHO, no.
Now if the excess clearance(slop) has been minimized, maybe.

If there is one part of the SS that has bugged me over the years is that tail stock. It is way too flimsy. I am surprised that SS has not made an upgrade over the years that fits on the way tubes and offers a rock solid tail stock.

Try putting it on the left side! Mine tailstock is a little loose when mounted in the usual position on the right side but is rock solid if I put in the left. Of course, you'd have to remove the headstock and carriage and turn them around....
Wonder if the double tilt upgrade is equally tight (or loose) on both ends.
