Where to purchase wood?
Moderator: admin
Integrety Wood is just down the street. That is where I purchase cut off pieces for my intrasia. Matter of fact they are making a mantle for my daughter. (I can't do everything, especially not right away). Guess I'll have to have a talk with them about their order policy. Redwood is a good idea. It's soft, but very locally available. I've worked with it before when I rebuild the shell for my other daughter's spa. Think I'll make the sides and shelves of redwood and use something else for the 4x4 corners and top. Something harder for the top surface. Hope to start next month when I have some time off. But it will be between summer honey-do projects. So we'll see.

Redwood
If you can find it, I agree with paul, Redwood is the best outdoor wood IMHO. Even if its "found" wood, once through the jointer and planer its just like new.

There are a few good lumber stores around, you just have to look and be willing to drive a bit. I've been ill and haven't done any woodworking in months. However, here are a few suggestions. I've made purchases at all of these places and I'm happy with the prices and the service.
Bohnhoff Lumber Company
3411 E. 26th Street, Los Angeles 90023
(323) 263-9361
They sell rough sawn lumber only. And I think they sell just about anything that you need. You might want to call ahead and check on the variety available. Also as to whether or not they are still in business. The owner and another employee were murdered last year. I don't know if the family is maintaining the business or not.
Ganahl Lumber Company
10742 Los Alamitos Boulevard, Los Alamitos 90720
(562) 346-2100
They sell pretty much anything. All of their stuff is S4S. and they have a little bit of everything there. There are several other Ganahl stores around, but you'll have to check to find one closer to you.
Austin Hardwoods and Hardware
610 N. Santiago, Santa Ana 92701
(714) 953-0848
This place is to woodworkers what Toy R Us is to kids. You walk in and just go "WOW". It has everything from handtools to powertools to antiques tools. A very nice variety of wood and plywood. It's not easy to get to, but it's worth the drive when I need something that I know I can't get any place else.

I use Austin in Santa Ana (http://www.th-h.com/locations.htm) and have had recommended Kelly-Wright (http://www.kelly-wright.com/products.htm) in Anaheim. I have gotten some very nice clear fir at Orange Coast Lumber(http://oclumber.com/) also in Santa Ana.
I know that Austin carries cypress which is also a stable outdoor wood.
