It might be easier to make a jig for each size dowel by drilling a hole through a piece of 2X4 or something similar. That will hold the dowel secure and also support the dowel to prevent any chipping or a blowout.

I don't know if a 4" would accommodate all your needs, but the small Bessey I cite below (from Home Depot) with the non marring jaw accessory might be a solution.

Couple these with some T-Slot adapters to lock it down, and it might be a solution for this and any number of small drilling needs.

Obviously Bessey sells a range of vice sizes, as do others.

Under $25 it might be a consideration. Or you could fabricate your own v-block jaws if you own the Shopsmith Combo vice already.

After seeing the pic of the SS vice you posted here, I ordered one tonight, I dont need one often, but when you do, you do. I wish it had a flat side to set something in it vertically, but then I thought, no I have a SS, just do it in horizontal boring mode.

I have both one of the new ones, and one from 1980 (like the one pictured below) when I bought my first new Mark V at the Shopsmith store on North Central Expressway in North Dallas.

I use them both all the time. I will look up the OEM name for the Manufacturer when I have time and post it, as the OEM guarantees them for life.

The OEM for Shopsmith on that is BORA. The vice is a 551027 from AffinityTool.com

They also offer a Bora 90 Degree Corner Clamp (Bora 551025) Quick Release Corner Vise for $30 that I have my eye on.

On the subject of vices, I have been quietly looking for a cross slide vice that would easily attach but haven't found one yet.

I want not to build a sliding base, so I can easily move it between Shopsmith and regular upright drill press. I've seen Grizzly and HF but wasn't exactly what I wanted. Milling bases I have seen so far are too heavy.

Anyone have a recommendation for a good one under $120? I've been watching eBay but due to the weight, the shipping is high. If I can find the right product, finding a supplier I can bundle something else with to get free shipping should be possible.
