most of the places that I bought from as a teen are long gone - places like Norris' in Newport News and Slaughter's in Phoebus.

and out of the nearest 10 places, 2 were Woodcrafts and one was the one that fjimp recommended.

not in Woodfinder but Waterfront Lumber is still there in Newport News. premium prices for premium quality construction materials.
if you go there, be careful. the lumberyard is fine but it is located between the coal piers and the roughest neighborhood in Newport News.
it is where I went when I needed good clear spruce for a project.

when I looked up Waterfront on google, the targeted ad showed me

it sounds interesting, but driving to the other side of Richmond (near Charlottesvile) for Northland looks like a faster trip for me and possibly for you.

I have seen some decent looking ads for lumber on Craigslist. there is a guy in Chesapeake who has recurring ads for an open warehouse of air dried lumber. there have also been a couple of people who seemed like they were selling collectibles instead of lumber with prices higher than turning stock at Woodcrafts.

there are a couple of clubs that meet at the Norfolk Woodcraft. I made it to part of one meeting of the woodturners club (I had to run over to pick up something for work and lucked into the meeting. unfortunately, my wife had me scheduled to be somewhere else before the meeting ended). club members are helpful and were actively discussing where they got wood for turning.

I have purchased both red ind white oak from them. I don't remember hearing of the Cambia Treatment at that point in time. Nor did I see this notice on their website before. I also note they offer the service for wholesale clients. In that I buy retail from them I feel certain the wood I have purchased although of excellent quality was not so treated. Jim

If anyone is interested, I want to mention that I just harvested some 30 trees off of my ranch, and had them slabbed into 2 x 10 x 10, with some only 1 x 10 x 10 and some 2 x 12 x 10. Black walnut, ash, pecan are mostly the wood types.

The drying has just begun. I am air drying in a covered barn.

My location is northeast of Dallas about 85 miles.

If anyone is interested, let me know. I will use some for myself, but I have more than I can use. I'm new to this, and could use guidance on pricing.

I guy at work just told me about "Yukon Lumber". Has anyone every bought from them or heard feedback about them?

Here is a place fairly local to me that I have used a few times over the years. Their website has a pretty full price list. It is a fun trip and is one of those places that except for one of the larger Wood-mizers everything looks like it has been there forever. I do not know if they ship or not but they are easy to contact.

since it is summer, it may be a few weeks before I see any of my cow-orkers who do woodworking and live on the southside. I'll try to ask them when I see them.

I don't recall ever going to Yukon, but that isn't really a negative comment. there used to be hardwood lumber yards on the peninsula 20 years ago. plus there is still a psychological barrier for some of us about crossing Hampton Roads to go shopping. probably from the days of having to catch and ride a ferry followed by the days of having to pay nasty tolls to use the bridge tunnel. now we just have the multi-hour traffic back-ups.

I'll be very interested in what you find there. I did find it interesting that their 20 bft bundle specials are 3/4" with pieces possibly as small as 3"x12". might be a good deal if you get to pick out your bundles in person.
