I would be very afraid of the chisel set pictured. I agree they look more like carving chisels. It's a shame we aren't a couple hundred miles closer. I have an old set of Shopsmith turning chisels I will never use. To give you and your son to have a chance to begin turning together I would be pleased to give them to you. Jim

I have a cheap set I'll send you. But they are rusty and dull. If you want to try to clean them up and use them, you can have them. May not even be worth the effort, though.

I still use my original SS gouge to round my blanks then I have a skew from Sorby which I use to finish my pens. I have seen some folks just using a skew for the entire process. Hope this helps.

Hi Ron,

You must have purchased your Mark V used, or if you bought it new, you ordered the chisels at the same time. Here is the list of standard accessories that come with a new purchase of a Mark V. When I bought mine, I did knot get any chisels (but I did order them right away): In fact, IIRC, the current list is exactly what I did get back in 1995!

I just dug out my original invoice from Sept of 1993 and see that I did order the shop 1 package 506916 which included the 5 piece lathe turning chisels among other items. Also see that things were a lot less expensive compared to now. Glad I bought it then.

hello and welcome to the forum,

there is a very active group of turners that meets on the the 4th Tuesday of the month in the Woodcraft store in Norfolk. unfortunately, that means that the November meeting was tonight. the December meeting is a cover dish party (and early in Dec), so the next regular meeting is not until January. there are a few SS owners among the membership. tonight's demo was Doug Campbell showing the joys of skews for spindle turning.

one of the co-owners of that Woodcraft is very into pen turning and teaches frequent classes on it. I think the next one is this Sunday. I haven't taken that class, but I expect that the quality is excellent. I have found that the courses at that Woodcraft are more than worth their fees.

the store's annual pen turning for our troops event was scheduled for Nov 14. I did not hear anyone mention it getting rescheduled so it probably happened despite the storm. they encourage people to bring beginner friends to learn pen turning at the event, but I was busy recovering from the storm damage and was not able to take advantage of the free instruction.

They had the pen turning. I saw in an email where they did 200 pens. I didn't know it was free.

I bought mine from a demo at the LOWE's. The guy dropped it off at my house right after the show. It was all put together w/casters. I did get a couple lathe center thingys. I ordered the DC3300 at the same time and it came a week or two later.
