Welcome to the forum Garyspens.
What speed ya using and is the tool rest close to the work? Which gouge are ya using?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Upon reading part of the link below, I realized my description of cutting, was actually 'shearing'.

It shows a back support, but does not describe how to make one.

All right, you talked me into it. After 13+ years in the factory working in the wet paint dept. then 11 years working in my powder coating shop I have finally stopped all that nonsense. I am now a librarian at our local town library.
Yes, in Dublin, west of Richmond.The bright lights and big city. We don't have a postman but we do have a stop light now.

Didn't mean to ignore you.I'm on slow speed with the tool rest very close. "What gouge...?" I have a large one and a small one. I'm using the small one now that the corners are gone. You see how versed I am in all this stuff. Maybe if I pretend this is just a very large pen it will be better.

Hey, I know Dublin a little. My wife has family and ancestors scattered from there to Hagerstown. She was born near Jacksonburg but grew up just north east of Bentonville. Her maiden name was Briar but it has been Robinson for 47 years this June 9th.
I think I recall seeing the Library there (I don't remember what I had for breakfast).
I'll let the guys that turn skinny stuff talk about the spindle. What little turning I have done has started as "chunks" and became round fat pieces. :D

I agree with Beeg that setting the rest close to the workpiece may help. This provides the support closer to the cutting. This is less critical with 'smaller workpieces'.:)

Personally, I think that the only "cure" will be a steady rest. Chatter can be caused by things as small as density variances in the cross section of the wood. I need to make one for myself in the next couple weeks. Looking around for old rollerblade wheels right now.
