shopsmith no longer sells a pen mandrel. however any place that sells mandrels will have a straight shaft mandrel that can be used with your drill chuck or the shopsmith 1/4" router chuck. pennstate industries also sells a mandrel with a 5/8" bore that can be used on all shopsmiths.

If you have a pen mandrel with a #2 Morse taper double nut the threaded end and hold the nuts in a vice then you will be able to unscrew the tapered end from the shaft. The shaft can be held in the SS drill chuck.

I have this one - it works well and the rod (mandrel) is replaceable if it gets bent.

Have you tried the Linseed Oil/CA glue finish? It's one of my favorites now for a durable high gloss finish on pens.

Are you talking about the One-Step Plastic Polish that Penn State offers? I haven't tried it but may look into it. I currently use Mylands friction polish and then the Beal buffing system.

Here is a video of a blo /ca finish for pens, or you could search google for blo /ca finish as there are variations of how it can be done. some people will sand between layers to get rid of any ridges. Good luck.
