What kind of 'set screws' were used to secure the 'pipes' to the 'castings'?:D

On the old shoe finishing machines used for decades in shoe factories and shoe repair shops the end frames were heavy cast iron and the horizontal members were steel pipe which were clamped into place. A concept not much distant from the SS bench tubes. There were 4 tubes (hey, like Shopsmith again). . . .

Those bolt heads on the fronts of the legs screw into a wedge lock. Also not so far removed from SS design for locking the sliding units. Only on these base locks rather than just backing on up to release you just loosened the bolt a ways and tapped it in with a hammer to release the wedge. Once sat up most were never loosened. Like an SS the unit could be disassembled in minutes but it was a long process to get it all back together "properly". Set up involved a lot of adjustment of the 5 or 6 line shaft clutches. As a result most were moved from one location to another intact. There was a lot of weight in one of those old beast. That line shaft and all of the driven shafts were solid steel 1-5/16" plus a huge amount of castings. Even the dust collector blowers (6" outlet) were cast iron housings.
