Here is a thought, Your son wants it black. Does he want it a gloss black like the PS3 or does he want just the black color?

You could stain instead of paint if you want some grain coming through but if he wants the gloss look of a smooth finish, go with JPG's method.

If not, condition the wood with a stain conditioner as it is pine and will absorb differently across the board, and then stain it with an ebony stain to get the black look.

Just another option. Of course you still have to sand in their too :)

Great looking project and design. Make sure you post a picture of it after it gets painted and put into use.
