All the drum sanders I have require Chuck's instructions. A fact I often forget when I haven't used them for a while.

I have several drum sanders and one of them I have had to sand the rubber drum to get the sand paper drum to fit. I have sleeves from a non SS manufacturer that will not fit the SS sanding drum even though the manufacturer did call them 2 1/4" drums. The talcum powder is a good idea and it works well.

This was the case here, and soap was the key. It was like a Schwin bicycle grip but tighter.
Thanks all. I did notice if you tighten very much there is a buldge that will affect sanding work. I had to loosen to try and make that go away.

Chuck/Bill/John/Whoever,
I would be interested in seeing your Shopsmith drum sanders that are 'lefty/tighty'. Below are two snaps of my Shopsmith drum sanders. To tighten the sleeve on all of these drums you turn the bolt heads clockwise (righty/tighty). Thanks in advance.[ATTACH]12718[/ATTACH]

O.K. Pics tomorrow evening..... Checked mine today - they are all left handed thread, except for the one that fits directly onto the 5/8" spindle - I didn't check that one:o . Of interest - The drum sanders I'm talking about have the nut on the inside of the drum, rather than the outside. Therein lies the difference of "tightening when on the main spindle.

It appears that I was talking about 'apples' (2-1/4" drum sanders) while you were talking about 'oranges' (extra long sanders, item E on this page). I have these and mine do have a left hand thread with a nut.

Notice a trend that is reflected in saw arbors?
Quill side = left hand threads.
Opposite end = right hand threads.
That be intentional!!!!!:)

Actually no need for photos any more. Confusions has been resolved. Wonderful what a couple of pics will do!:)

Now I seem to use every drum except the 2 1/4" one.
BTW, I use silicone spray on the rubber to keep them clean make sliding on/off a lot easier.
