OK, I was flat scared of doing any incisions on these, so I just epoxied some marquetry into cross shapes. These are for my niece and nephew having religious events soon:

Oops, the lighting/contrast wasn't very good here.
Overall, the tools used were:
SS Bandsaw: All bookmatching resaw-cuts and miter cuts.
SS Tablesaw: Dadoes and Grooves allowing mating lids and bottoms (I hate working with hinges).
SS Disc Sander: Fine tuning of miter cuts (table tilted exactly 45 degrees to the right).
Block Plane: Almost all the smoothing, very little sandpaper needed. Also did some subtle thickness-tapering for fitting the panels into the dadoes.
Japanese-style small saw and simple ACE hardware miter-box: Cutting the purchased marquetry strips to neat lengths.
