If you do a lot of prep and varnish work as you say and can therefore justify the cost, you should look into Mirka products. I have theirCeros DC powered sander and use it with their Abranet discs. This is a revolutionary approach to sanding that I wish I had gone to sooner.

Best dust collection
Small size, easy grip in one hand
Great speed range, smooth transition
Low to no vibration
Low noise
Extreme disc life / no clogging
Great for sanding finishes
Not cheap :-( ............. but worth the money if you are doing a lot of sanding.
