That is what I use mine for. I don't have a biscuit joiner, so I join a lot of boards with dowels. The horizontal boring feature allows me to join boards for a perfect fit. It works great on edge to edge, edge to end, or any combination I need.

If your board is not wider than the opening on your drill press, can you also do that operation there?

Can it be done with standard drill press? Yes but it is hard to balance the workpiece on its edge and drill the other edge vertically and get it all to line up. Would need jigs, fixtures and clamps. In horizontal mode, the face of the board sits on the work table and the opposite edge can be controlled with the rip fence.
