skoler.. Where exactly are you in CA? You mentioned Whittier.. You must be near the 605 somewhere (that's a freeway for those of you not in CA)..

Yup i'm in Huntington beach... She's a little scattered as i give the other parts some TLC.. but after my trip to whittier tomorrow i should be back in business and will post pics of the whole set up. thanks

As anticipated Vince at Battels Hardware had me running in 25 minutes! Guess it was the capacitor... he showed me how mine failed the tester... either way i'm into this SS for $137, and a couple of hours driven around. take a look i think she's pretty nice!
the only thing she's missing for now... is the two telescoping legs on the right side table support... i'll get around to buying them.

Well I "THINK" that's the FIRST capacitor failure we've had for sure? GREAT ya got it running now.

not to say i have never been over sold before.. but Vince at the repair shop did everything he was supposed to, by taking me back to his bench and showing me the problem and he gave me back the "spent" capacitor... Hell he could have told me to rub my belly and jump on one foot to make it run and i'd of tried it at least.... for such a steal, paying a pro was no sweat of my back.
now time to make some sawdust!

Kris, to be clear, you got the Shopsmith for $100 and you paid Battels $37 to diagnose and replace the start capacitor? If so, looks like the you still owe the machine. 
Maybe you should buy it the 520 upgrade or something else nice.

P.S. I could not believe that a motor that looked that good was fried!

Yup, to say the least, right time, right deal, right place! and being a rookie to the Shop Smith it feels real sweet to have gotten such a nice deal...... i'll treat her good!

You guys don't read the posts carefully enough. I have reported capacitor failures. They don't happen as frequently as some others but they do happen. I mean, after all, that is why there is a starter capacitor in these motors. They provide an additional current surge at startup when the motor demands a greater current than is required after the motor reaches run speed.
Like some people replace bearings whenever they go inside a motor, I also replace the start capacitor.
