How big is a 2 x 4?

Don't worry about the rounded edges. Just use em as is and put a temper board on top.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Well, this is good news, perhaps. Given that a lumber yard exists, the 1 3/4 x 3 3/4 {square corner} lumber yard 2x4s, if of comparable to stud quality and not more than, say 30 to 50% more in cost, wood be the way to go if one wanted to mill his own clean 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 2x4s, seems to me. I'm betting that would still be cost preferable to the lumber yard "finished" version of the same thing.Ed in Tampa wrote:The rounded edges are used on 2x4 destined to be used as STUDs which is usually what large lumber yards and big box stores sell them for.
However you can buy square edged 2x4's. Most lumber yards will supply them if requested. Most 2x4 sold as studs again with rounded edges will be 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
However lumber yard 2x4's square corners will be 1 3/4 x 3 3/4 if you ask for hardwood sized.
If you want to pay the money you can get square corner 2x4 inch 2x4's also.

Next project that is whut I'll look for.
Thanks, all, for the info. Very helpful indeed.
(Wow. We moved back here in '94 and I just realized I haven't seen a square edged 2x4 since. Good grief.)

[ As for this bench, I've milled the stock to 1 13/32, ripped]
I can see, I think, that using the 2x4s as is (as was?) would have made as worthy a bench, and saved emptying my SS ShopSucker an extra time, not to mention all the work. {"Work"? Nah-- fun!} But I know that when the poly dries I'll be happier with this one.

Now that is an apt and clever idea!beeg wrote:Don't worry about the rounded edges. Just use em as is and put a temper board on top.
Amazing whut a little creativeness can do.

Indeed!mbcabinetmaker wrote:Now where else in the World can you have a 3 page discussion on the size of a 2x4.I love this forum!
BTW I doubt any 'Lumber Yard' could supply those non-std 2x4's. A Lumber Mill would!
Good luck finding one!

I'm at the point where I've learned enough to know how little I know, and the forum is a great helpful resource.
Speaking of 2x4s, the final irony:
I milled the studs to 1-13/32 x 3-1/4. Good lookers, most of 'em, and since they'll be doubled up there are opportunities galore to hide any rough spots.
Straight, smooth, flat, square, square corners, uh--- wait sec- square corners, square corners, something don't sound right...
Ah, so-- once all the laminating's done I'll need to chamfer or roundover most of the outside long corners. That's okay. This way they'll be consistent, and neat.
