Conical Disc Sander and Jointer

Jeff - since you tested your square - everything is tight - and with the 4 degree setting on the table, the table is square with the conical disk (or vice versa). I'll bet your wood also comes out square. and the wood was not square to begin with.

I went back to the ss to photograph the set-up and decided to try again. I reset the table with the disk and passed another board through. It came out perfectly square.

I am not sure what happenend the first time as the board was definitely not square when I was done sanding. I had set up everything the same. I must have done something differently, but I am not sure what it could be.

After reading your original Post, and all the replys that followed, I was somewhat confused myself, as everyone offered excellent advice, and the correct way to set up the disk.

Then, when you replied that suddenly the disk was working correctly, giving you a 90 degree square, and that you did not know why............. It caused me to go back to your original Post, and reading more carefully, the possible answer lies right there!

You indicated that you set up the disk "square to the center of the disk". This is wrong! You do not sand with the center (no sandpaper at the center) of the conical disk. You square (4 degrees) with the sandpaper portion of the disk.

The only explanation that I can think of is that, and believe me, this happens to all of us,............that you may have been tired, in a hurry to finish, or just those "Shop Demons" were having some fun at your expense.

I guess I might not have made myself clear. I meant square at the center of the disk from front to back. This is the point at which the conical disk sands.

I may not know too much about woodworking, but I do know that I can't sand where there is no sandpaper.
