No, no...the Dust Deputy goes between the tool and the shop vac...it's the FIRST filter in line, and collects most of the stuff. Only a little goes on to wind up in the shop vac filter.
What I'm wondering is, can you use the "regular" Dust Deputy with a collector like the DC3300, or do you have to get the more expensive "pro" model?

You can use a Dust Deputy or the Rockler version with the DC3300. It works really well and saves on having the clean and empty the DC3300.
Actually my 5 HP Shopvac seems to pull more out of my table saw than the DC3300 through one hose. I'm working on a manifold where I can connect more than one hose to my table saw since it has a 4" output and the DC3300 has three, 2.5" inputs.

I am quite satisfied with the 'regular' DD and use it with either the DC 3300 or a small shop-vac.
I assume the DD 'pro' version would be more 'durable'.

Since the Dust Deputy is a "closed system", does a system not move the same amount of air either with or without the Dusty Deputy installed.
The difference being that a Dust Deputy collects the heavier stuff as it passes through and the rest (the fine stuff) goes on to the DC3300 or Shop Vac or whatever.

I t is a closed system if sealed properly. But any cyclone cuts the strength of a dust collector's overall suction due to frictional loss, changes in direction of air flow, and a longer path.
But the Dust Deputy still works very well!

Got a reply to an email inquiry to Oneida...according to them, a dust collector requires the larger pro Dust Deputy. They said the higher airflow would choke or collapse the smaller one.
That'd make sense except that some of you say it works anyhow!

I'd wondered about that since this discussion began and different "dust collectors" (i.e. different sizes/power) had been mentioned.
I have used and built a variety of cyclones. There are LOTS of variables involved and many designs. My best (educated) guess is that you need to try a combination to really find out whether it works or not.
I have used a Dust Deputy with a shop vac and also with a much more powerful central vac. Both worked VERY well. Oneida usually has really knowledgeable folks around to talk about their products, but I'm guessing that the response from them was not correct.
Oneida itself recommends the DD for various uses (to me implying that it WILL work with various powered devices). My experience bears this out.
Normally, a shop vac is a high speed, lower flow machine versus a "real" dust collector which is designed to gulp a big volume of air but at a slower pace. I've never used a Shopsmith DC, but it's a fairly low horsepower motor compared to what is usually used with a cyclone (and the smaller DD is a small cyclone compared to most). It would not be surprising to see it be a good/ synergistic combination.

I think that we collectively do not fully understand the technical issues involved in dust collection. Cleaning the minute particles out of the air and sucking stuff up off the floor are two entirely different operations. One is done by a dust collector and the other by a vacuum system.
The next time you clean out your dust collector, compare what is in the plastic bag with the stuff that falls down out of the top. Better yet, pull off the dust collector bag and dump some of it on the floor. There is a big difference in what gets collected in these two locations.

So true!
Dust collection, to me, means getting it all (to prevent a mess, but more importantly, getting ALL of the dangerous lung killers out of the air).
Only a really big machine will get the fine stuff! Bill Pentz writes at length about this here

We are discussing the other types of machines, whether cyclones or something like the Shopsmith machine. These just are not big enough to collect the smaller particles.......but can do a good job on everything else.
