As for Microsoft Sercurity Essentials there is an option to have it check for updates before it does a scheduled scan of your system. So in effect everytime it does a scan it would first check for and download any needed updates.
Therefore all you wouldn't get updates for is things like Office, Media player and such. But all of these have an option that will allow you to periodically check for and install any updates. If you look at your update history you will notice most if not all updates were for windoews.
Ed, each version of Windows has it's own unique way of controling the update process. FYI currently (i.e Windows7) has "Windows Update" controling everything, and yes it has an option (under settings) that allows one to turn off the updating of the Office products.
So, although it's hard to give once answer to what is a complicated question. My point is, getting ALL the updates is essential for a secure PC system and if this is not working for some reason you should fix the issue. Turning the update off is NOT a fix and leaves you at risk if you access the Internet.

I agree and that is probably why Microsoft is working on the problem.
I was very reluctant to turn off system updates but I also couldn't live with my system thrashing whenever it felt like it.

The problem is now fixed by Microsoft. If you turned off Microsoft updates you should go to window update (control panel) click on it and when it comes up in you lower right box you can turn Microsoft updates back on. Then you are to do a update, reboot and then do another update and see if you system hangs. According to those on the thread the fix works. So I guess the point in now moot.

The 'problem' occurred with XP Sp3 on machines with low memory(< 1GB) capacity.

I tested the fix on mine and it is working like a champ now.
Yes I think the problem just manifested itself on XP's but I suspect MS knew they had something wrong in one of the fixes they applied in early Aug.

I set updates to windows only. Since I do not have any of the other msoft stuff installed it was a no brainer. Although I have more than 1gb ram, I did experience something that was hogging my system occasionally.
Hasn't happened recently. Keeping fingers crossed!
A Computer Problem

I don't know what my problem was and I don't know what has been done to alleviate it but it is gone. All of the original software is back on the machine. MSE is running. Automatic Updates is turned on. The computer is functioning normal and most obvious of all is that there is no more thrashing going on.
MsMpEng.exe does its thing when I first turn on and then it settles down to almost completely idle. On Task Manager at this time I do not see wuauclt at all.
What Happened?

It seems obvious to me that Microsoft has been working diligently while we have been discussing this issue. I think they (MS) release software fixes on a weekly basis. This week they must have worked on MsMpEng.exe.

Microsoft releases the updates on the second Tuesday of each month (the day is called "Patch Tuesday")

I'm glad I found this thread again. I have a web server here that had problems staying connected to the internet. I had to constantly restart the server or do a repair function from the network icon in my tool bar. As soon as I deleted the extra instance of "wuaclt.exe" the connection stayed solid for days.
I almost bought a new network card because I thought it was a hardware issue. Good thing I was procrastinating
