ACTUALLY - I did not give that much consideration because of the environment in which I live.

You are right you will be cutting a 1x6x36 inch board from a 1x10x96 to get the perfect match. Been there done it. Wish I had the money I could have saved had I done it without input from the better half.

The problem now is she dreams up projects that I have no idea how to do. With molding I can't reproduce and wood I can't afford. Right now we have an unfinished fire place because she can't draw, explain, conceptualize the moulding she wants on it. But she will know it when she sees it. Go figure.
We also have a bathroom in need of moulding that will be put up as soon as we (she) decides on the the PERFECT color.

My problem is she has her own business of interior design, specializing in silk floral arrangements. So she knows what she wants. I have torn apart more silk flower stems to get (I just want that one flower there) piece she needs.

Got to admit her work looks fantastic but man oh man it can be frustrating getting there. I kind of chuckle when I watch HGTV and these home designer shows. They show the designer coming in and making the plan but they never show the guy in the back trying to build what the designer wants. Oh my aching back!

Ed, I have been married to this woman for 53 years. I am not being sucked in. I just know how to select my battles. If I disagree with her, I make her listen to me until I have voiced my disagreement (at least once), and I then do it her way. WIN - WIN and a chance to go for 54. BTW - the TV cabinet that is being replaced was done her way - it is too small with too high a COG.

What ever happened to 'give'/'take'?

I agree 'pick yer battles', but only to win the battle because it really matters.

A disagreement is one thing, a battle a considerable escalation!

Always listen!!!! Ya just might be wrong at times.

I have trouble with 'because I want it that way'. No 'reason' or ability to explain, just 'I want'.

Dusty you got a few years on me we are only 47 years in wedded bliss. I always do as she says and we get along fine.

Then about 12 years ago I asked for advice.

Until then I had made wood working sound complicated and technical so she stayed clear of my shop (man cave/boys club). My grand daughter needed a doll house and unlike the one I built for my daughters which I built myself and they loved, I got grand ma involved. Soon I was carving toilets, building miniature scroll work shelfs and drapery fixtures. I had to install ceramic tile in the bath and vinyl in the utility room. I even had to paint the living room multiple time to get the color right.

From that day on she has felt she had an open invitation to the shop. Picking up some of my "Prized" lumber (really scrapes) to draw out her next project. I just sit there with my eyes going around in circles as I try to figure how on earth I would build such a thing and even more importantly how I would hold it together so it didn't look cobbled up.

Do you know what it is like to set your heart on rubbing your prized plane with linseed oil all day and find out you and her are going to go over plans all day?

It is a simple project she wants to talk to about that she saw on Divine Design and whether it would work the same if you completely reengineered it and changing it from a bathroom wall cabinet of painted MDF to a kitchen island cabinet done in $12 a board foot walnut with book matched sides and scroll work Michael Angelo would stumble on?

Have her help you calculate the number of board feet required for her solid walnut job and then show her the potential cost (at $12/board foot). If that doesn't deter her, you might as well throw in the cost of a new set of sharp saw blades and get started.

Once a project has been decided I take the love of my life along while shopping for materials. As the wood is cost out the plans seem to change. Truth is she is tighter with a buck than I am. Jim
