I'm trying to set up to cut a 45 cross cut for the first time on my mark v. I start to tilt the table while moving the quill to allow the "tilt" but the lower blade guard gets in the way at about 30. Only way I can figure to do it is without the lower guard ! I have the lower guard with the alum. spacer thingy... tried it with the spacer and without... what am I doing wrong ??

I believe you have to remove the guard and don't forget the quill movement in and out to center back in your table insert. If it's a longer board, I know you have to slide the headstock all the way to the right end of the tubes or your board will get in the way. You'll get way more info, but check that.

I'm not familiar with the guard on the 1981 vintage Shopsmith but on my 520 it is useful to raise the table all the way, then tilt. Then lower the table while extending quill.

If you are using a 500, there are two plastic guards located just underneath the table near the tiebar. There is one on back and one on front which will prohibit the table from tilting sufficiently. The larger guard that protects the user from the major section of the under table should not be in the way.

Someone else gave you the right information about moving the main table and headstock as far as you can to the right of the base. Also, remove any auxiliary tables or tailstock for the lathe. This will allow the board to extend beyond the bed near the floor/ground. Hope this helps.
